Roadside Wheat

Dry wheat
at the edge of the road,
stems clacking
in the late heat.

Across the paddocks
nothing moves
but light.

A truck passes,
its sound dragged thin
towards the hills.

Then wheat again.

That small
hollow music

with no one
to hear it.
